Interview of Samit Patel by Abdullah Haider on 3rd February 2020

Samit Patel looks ahead to the MCC tour of Pakistan and playing for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League where he is looking forward to teaming up with Haris Rauf. Samit mentions that Stephen Fleming was the best Captain that he has played under, but also holds Dan Christian in a high regard. As a left arm spinner, Samit talks about how he relishes bowling with the new ball inside the first six overs of a T20 match.

Samit is looking forward to visiting Lahore, a city he hasn’t been to before as his time in Pakistan up to now has been restricted to Karachi in previous visits. Despite now being 35 and last featuring for England in 2015 against Pakistan in the final Test of the series in Sharjah, Samit hasn’t given up hope of representing England again, although admits chances seem slim at present.

The all rounder backs Notts teammate Alex Hales to return to the England side following a successful and impressive Big Bash campaign for Sydney Thunder, especially looking ahead to the T20 World Cup down under later in the year.

Reflecting on the highs of his career, Samit picks out getting his Test cap in Sri Lanka in 2012 and winning the domestic white ball double with Nottinghamshire on finals day in 2017 to go along with picking up a 5 fer against South Africa in an ODI at the Oval in 2008. Samit also touches on how he found playing spin natural as one of the better players of spin bowling on the county circuit.

Murali Karthik was a left arm spinner he was impressed by with his rhythmical bowling action when asked on if there was a left arm spinner that he looked up to growing up or while he was still playing.

Samit touches on how new Nottinghamshire recruit Haseeb Hameed has settled well into life with his new county and is hoping he has a productive season in four day cricket.

He also has thrown his weight behind Sohail Akhtar who for many was a surprising choice as Lahore Qalandars Captain for this month’s Pakistan Super League Season Five.
