How it works

Each country will play one series of 3 ODIs against eight different countries. 4 home and 4 away series each. There will be 4 teams each country won’t play against in a 13 team ODI league. Top 7 plus India as hosts qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup. The remaining 5 countries have to go through a qualifying tournament where they will be joined by 5 other teams such as Nepal, Scotland etc to fight for the last 2 spots to make the 10 team World Cup in 2023. Unlike the Test Championship, everybody will play the same number of games, although you don’t play everybody. Gives bilateral ODIs meaning, context and purpose. Finally a clear easy to understand proper league structure for ODIs and pathway for World Cup qualification that all teams have to go through. Not just done on rankings anymore. League will run for 23 months between May 2020 and March 2022. Not just playing for World Cup qualification, but to win the league as well in its own right. Similar to international football outside of the major tournaments in a way. It involves the 12 Test nations and the Dutch.
