This time last year the 2019 World Cup was in progress.
It was a unique World Cup with it returning to England (the original home of the tournament) for the first time in the 21st century. Also, it was the first time in 27 years (in the first ever coloured clothing edition) that the World Cup was played in a round robin format again. And like then 27 years earlier, England reached the final having not done so in the 27 year time gap that the tournament moved away from an everybody plays everybody round robin format.
Some fantastic photos from various games and events during the tournament in the link at the bottom.
Check them out.
It was the greatest Cricket World Cup there has been to date with an unforgettable finish on a mid July Sunday evening in London. After several one sided World Cup finals since the tournament had been contested in coloured clothing post the 1987 tournament in Asia, we had a game for the ages.
England won it on home soil for the first time in the 44 year history of the competition in the 12th edition and fifth edition to be contested in England. They met New Zealand in the final who like England had participated in all previous 11 editions from 1975, but never managed to win the whole competition. For the first time since Sri Lanka in Lahore in 1996 we had a new champion and holder of the trophy with England becoming the 6th different cricket team to win the Men’s ICC ODI World Cup.
Unlike, India in 2015 and Australia in 2019, can England successfully defend their title away from home having won the previous edition on home turf in 2023?
