It was well known that the ground will host the 2023 decider. However, recently at the ICC meeting prior to the commencement of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, it was revealed that Lord’s will host the 2025 decider too. However, a glance at the FTP shows the 2025-2027 cycle will conclude in March 2027 too. This means April and May will give way for the IPL, resulting in another June final. This means England will once again be the favoured and obvious location for the final for 2027 too in addition to 2023 and 2025.
The June window rules out a number of countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Pakistan from hosting the showpiece Test fixture given first class cricket is barely played in those months in those nations. And England is the most attractive host from the limited viable options at this time of the year. A combination of the lure of Lord’s, the diverse range of support for various Test nations, impressive crowd attendances for Test Cricket and tried and tested experience in hosting successful ICC Events puts England ahead of the likes of Sri Lanka and West Indies who could be other potential hosts for a June window.
Lord’s has previously hosted three consecutive ICC Cricket World Cup finals in 1975, 1979 and 1983. But all indications are that the iconic London venue will now host three consecutive ICC World Test Championship finals in 2023, 2025 and now 2027 too based on the men’s future tours programme that was published yesterday.
