Wisden Cricketers of the Year will be revealed in three months time in line with the start of the English domestic summer of cricket for 2023. Here are a look at potential overseas candidates for their exploits in the 2022 English summer of cricket.
Daryll Mitchell – Mitchell had a phenomenal Test series against Ben Stokes’s rejuvenated England Test side under newly appointed Test Coach Brendon McCullum. He formed a very successful partnership with Tom Blundell in particular. Mitchell has some family connections with England through his father’s rugby coaching career and therefore it would have surely meant plenty to him to make his mark on a New Zealand Test tour of England, albeit in a series where the visitors were whitewashed 3-0. Mitchell was clearly the outstanding contributor in batting from all visiting Test teams in England last summer.
Pujara – Pujara was prolific in both the County Championship and Royal London One Day Cup for Sussex, his first season with the club. Towards the latter stages of the season, the Indian overseas top order batter even got captaincy opportunities at the club. He will still be at Hove in 2023. His performances in 2022 went a long way to helping him earn a recall to the Indian Test team for the rescheduled 5th Test at Edgbaston in July where he opened the batting in the absence of Rohit Sharma, making a half century in the second innings of the solitary Test.
Shan Masood – Masood enjoyed a memorable stint with Derbyshire in the first half of the season. Like Pujara, he earned captaincy opportunities through his performances and popularity in the dressing room. The left hander however is moving on to lead Yorkshire in 2023 and unlike Pujara won’t be coming back to his 2022 club. The Pakistani international had a memorable first season of County Cricket at the age of 32.
