Men’s international cricket will return to Chelmsford in May as Ireland host Bangladesh in a three match series which forms part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. The county ground has previously held ICC Cricket World Cup matches in England in 1983 and 1999. Zimbabwe turning over African rivals South Africa in the 1999 competition was the last international fixture at the venue. Nonetheless, the headquarters of Essex Cricket has hosted Women’s internationals with regularity and this included a fixture between England and South Africa prior to the Commonwealth Games in Edgbaston last summer.
It will be a big summer of cricket for Ireland in England as they will also play a four day Test Match at Lord’s on the first four days of June to open the English Test summer. Towards the end of the summer Ireland will also play world champions England in their backyard just shortly before England will travel to India to try and defend their World Cup crown. Therefore, this ODI series against Bangladesh in English conditions will serve as useful preparation for those assignments against England in England later in the summer.
Ireland have won their last ODI and T20I against England. The Ireland vs Bangladesh ODI on 9th May will be the opening match of the 2023 English international summer in England. Previously there were plans for an Ireland vs Bangladesh series in May 2020 in Chelmsford and other English venues too, but COVID like a lot of things prevented that from ever occurring.
