Taufeeq Umar played 44 Tests and 22 ODIs for Pakistan, scoring 7 Test centuries and 3 half centuries in the coloured clothing. He played in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup where he opened with Saeed Anwar, including in the famous India vs Pakistan clash in Centurion. He also has experience of playing India vs Pakistan Test Cricket, something many Test cricketers from Pakistan and India have missed out on.
In 2011 he became the first Pakistani opener since Aamir Sohail in 1992 to score a Test double century which he achieved against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, in a series Pakistan went on to win. In 2012 he played in every Test of Pakistan’s 3-0 whitewash of England in the United Arab Emirates. Taufeeq also opened the batting in Pakistan’s 1-0 Test series victory in New Zealand in January 2011, which was the last time an Asian team won a Test series in New Zealand. He made two half centuries in that short series.
Taufeeq was up until recently serving as batting coach of the Pakistan Women’s team and I (Abdullah Haider) caught up with him while Pakistan were touring England in May. The interview was done on 28th May ahead of their final game of the tour in Chelmsford the following day.
Listen to Taufeeq’s answers on Abdullah’s questions below:

In the intro – I was intending to say Taufeeq was part of the first Pakistan team to win a Test series against South Africa in 2003-04. He was the leading run scorer in that series and also the player of the Test series. I said first Test series win however without mentioning RSA.
Note: Questions from Abdullah are in English and answers from Taufeeq are in Urdu in this interview.
